Shel House by Phenotype
The Shel House by Phenotype Architecture Studio is a remarkable example of a dwelling that exists in harmony with its surroundings.
Located in the stunning and rugged landscape of Ladakh in northern India, this 15,000-square-foot homestay captures the essence of the natural environment while providing a warm and inviting space for its inhabitants.
The house is the result of a design approach that prioritizes simplicity, balance, and respect for the natural environment. The structure is built with a wooden framework and insulated mud brick walls, using locally sourced materials and techniques that have withstood Ladakh’s harsh weather conditions over the centuries.
Willow and Poplar trees were used for the columns, beams, and slabs, creating a unique spatial rhythm that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
The design is inspired by the concept of symbiosis, with the house serving as a conduit between the inhabitants and the breathtaking natural environment.
The goal was to create a space that seamlessly blends into its surroundings, enabling the inhabitants to feel fully immersed in the environment rather than seeking refuge from it.
The home is a vehicle for connecting people with the awe-inspiring natural world, creating a sense of unity that is ever-changing and everlasting.
The studio’s contemporary take on traditional Ladakhi architecture is visible in the use of Shinshak, a decorative wooden carving, and Pensak, a band of wooden spokes, both of which are commonly found in local monasteries.
The flooring, called Shen flooring, uses a typical interlocking system that is easy to repair and maintain, while simple linear fenestrations form a rhythmic and functional exterior.
The home features south-facing, sun-filled spaces that invite light and warmth, while a skylight above one of the beds provides endless views of the Milky Way. The Ladakhi kitchen and bookshelf with an infinity knot of Buddhist symbolism add occasional cultural nods to the otherwise unadorned space.
In essence, the Shel House is a celebration of the natural environment, creating a sense of balance and harmony with the landscape. The architecture and design of the home pay tribute to the traditions and materials of the region while embracing modern design principles.
It is a unique and remarkable example of a dwelling that exists in perfect symbiosis with its environment, providing a space that is both functional and deeply connected to the awe-inspiring landscape of Ladakh.
